Relaxation Dentistry

(also called Dental or Clinical Hypnosis)

Too often, ideas about hypnosis are founded on myths and misconceptions.

Clinical hypnosis is not mind control. It has nothing to do with the bizarre concepts shown in movies, nor is it anything like entertainment or “stage hypnosis."

Hypnosis is a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention. It is like using a magnifying glass to focus the rays of the sun and make them more powerful. Similarly, when our minds are concentrated and focused, we are able to use our minds more powerfully. Because hypnosis allows people to use more of their potential, learning self-hypnosis is the ultimate act of self-control.

Clinical hypnosis is a therapeutic tool that you can use to enhance your own health and well-being. Working together, you can use hypnosis to make routine cleanings more comfortable, ease your anxiety, and help reduce pain and discomfort during and after procedures like fillings, root canals, and extractions.

Dental Applications

The training we received in clinical hypnosis allows us to teach patients to use this tool for many beneficial purposes:

  • Relaxation
  • Anxiety controlrelaxeddentalpt
  • Control of Bruxism (grinding of teeth)
  • Gag reflex reduction
  • Pain control
  • Anesthesia
  • Reduction of bleeding and swelling
  • Improvement of  oral hygiene habits ( for example-thumb sucking, nail biting)
  • More rapid, comfortable healing
  • Adjustment to oral appliances

We only use hypnosis  for licensed, therapeutic dental purposes and are a member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Members of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis have received specialized training in therapeutic applications of hypnosis.  Training offered by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis is accredited by the Academy of General Dentistry.

As a member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, we are bound by a Code of Conduct regarding our use of hypnosis, and by the American Dental Association’s Code of Ethics.

Effectiveness

Some individuals seem to have higher native hypnotic talent and capacity that may allow them to benefit more readily from hypnosis.  It is important to keep in mind that hypnosis is like any other therapeutic modality: it is of major benefit to some patients with some problems, and it is helpful with many other patients, but individual responses vary.
